Palestine Center: 31 prisoners from Gaza Strip on list of deans of prisoners
The Palestine Center for Prisoner Studies confirmed that 31 prisoners from the Gaza Strip are on the list of deans of prisoners, who have spent more than 20 years continuously in the occupation prison, and their number recently reached 388 prisoners.
The Palestine Center stated that the occupation is still detaining 193 prisoners from the Gaza Strip, most of whom are sentenced to various sentences, 26 of whom are serving life sentences for one or more times, while 31 of them are on the list of deans of prisoners whose continuous detention period exceeded 20 years. .
The Palestine Center indicated that the oldest prisoner in the Gaza Strip is the prisoner “Dia Zakaria al-Faluji”, who is one of the old prisoners and has been detained since October 1992 and spent more than 30 years in the occupation prisons. He was supposed to be released as part of the fourth batch of the deal to revive the negotiations that took place in late 2013. According to which 78 former prisoners were liberated, while the occupation refused to release the fourth batch.
The researcher, Riyad Al-Ashqar, the director of the center, explained that two prisoners from the Gaza Strip joined the list of deans of prisoners this year, 2023, after exceeding the period of their detention for twenty years. 2003, and a prison sentence of (24 years), and the prisoner, Ayman Ibrahim Al-Awawdeh (50 years), from Al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. He has been detained since March 25, 2003 and is serving a life sentence in prison.
He pointed out that the highest-ranking prisoner in the Gaza Strip is the prisoner “Hassan Abd al-Rahman Salama” from the city of Khan Younis, who was sentenced to life imprisonment accumulating 48 times. He has been detained since May 1996, and he is one of the leaders of the captive national movement, and the occupation refused to release him as part of the Wafaa al-Ahrar deal.
Al-Ashqar indicated that two of the deans of prisoners from the Gaza Strip were martyred in the occupation prisons as a result of the crime of medical negligence against them. He is provided with the necessary medical care, and he was martyred in February 2019 after spending 28 years behind bars, and his body is still being held, and the martyr prisoner “Saada Khalil Al-Gharabli” (75 years) from the Gaza Strip, was arrested in 1994, and was sentenced to life imprisonment, and he was martyred in a hospital Kaplan inside the occupied in June 2020, as a result of medical negligence, after spending 26 years in captivity.
He explained that a number of the deans of the prisoners of the Gaza Strip are subjected to severe health conditions, the most difficult of which is the case of the sick prisoner, “Murad Fahmy Abu Muailiq,” 48 years old, from the central region. He has been detained since June 17, 2001. He was serving his sentence, and he was seriously injured at the time of his arrest, and he was subjected to a movement disability and used a wheelchair and crutches for several years inside the prison, and he still suffers from a deteriorating health condition and is transferred from time to time to hospitals.
Al-Ashqar added, “The prisoners of the Gaza Strip suffer from deprivation of visiting their families, as the visits were interrupted continuously for more than 6 years, and after the strike in 2012, which lasted 28 days, the prisoners were able to extract a decision to resume visits to the prisoners of the Strip, but the occupation authorities returned after 4 years and stopped them completely.” Visits of nearly half of the prisoners in the Gaza Strip, under the pretext that they belong to resistance organizations.
