Long Search Beneath One House
Civil defense crews in the Gaza Strip announced on Monday that they had recovered the remains of 99 people from beneath the rubble of a house belonging to the Abu Sharia and al-Husayneh families in the Sabra neighborhood, south of Gaza City. The recovery followed a search operation that had continued for ten days under extremely difficult field and humanitarian conditions. Officials said the victims had been killed in earlier Israeli airstrikes during the war on Gaza.
Search Crews Battling Destruction and Shortages
Rescue teams confirmed that recovery operations continue to face major obstacles due to the scale of destruction left by the strikes, compounded by an acute shortage of the equipment and machinery needed to reach the missing. They noted that thousands of victims remain unaccounted for beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings across different parts of the Gaza Strip, with many targeted sites still inaccessible because of the extent of the damage and the ongoing difficult conditions on the ground.
Thousands Still Believed Buried Across the Strip
According to official figures, around eight thousand people are still believed to be buried under rubble in various areas of Gaza. Rescue crews say they are continuing their efforts to recover victims despite limited resources and an urgent need for specialized heavy equipment and machinery to access burial sites beneath the debris.
The Sabra recovery comes as Palestinian death and injury tolls from the broader conflict continue to climb, with official counts citing well over 247,000 Palestinians killed or wounded since October 2023, the majority of them women and children, alongside hundreds of thousands displaced and widespread destruction that has erased much of the Gaza Strip’s urban landscape. Humanitarian and rescue organizations continue to call for greater access to heavy machinery and international support to accelerate the recovery of the missing and provide dignified burials for the deceased.
