A Bomb on a Tent Meant to Be Shelter
An 8-year-old Palestinian girl named Rita was killed on Thursday when an Israeli airstrike struck the displacement tent where she and her family were sheltering in the Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The strike killed a second person alongside her and left three others wounded, one of them in critical condition, according to medical sources at Nasser Hospital. Like hundreds of thousands of displaced families across the Strip, Rita had been living in a makeshift tent after being forced from her home amid the ongoing war, in an area that many residents had come to see as relatively safer ground.
One Child Among a Night of Loss
Rita’s death came during a wave of Israeli strikes that hit scattered areas across southern, central, and northern Gaza overnight and into Thursday morning, killing at least six Palestinians in total, including two children, and wounding dozens more. In central Gaza, 18-month-old Zaid Mohammed Nawfal was killed in a separate strike on a residential apartment in the Bureij refugee camp, without prior warning. Journalists on the ground described it as a violent night for residents, as strikes hit multiple locations in quick succession, with Israeli bombardment reported to have continued without pause since midnight.
Rita’s story spread quickly on social media, shared by users highlighting her as a face behind the rising toll of child deaths in Gaza — a reminder that behind every number in the casualty count is a name, a family, and a life cut short. Her death adds to a war that has now killed more than 72,000 Palestinians and wounded around 172,000 others since October 2023, despite a ceasefire agreement that has technically been in place since October 10 of last year. Israeli forces continue to violate that truce on a near-daily basis, according to Gaza’s health authorities, with strikes on displacement tents — meant to be places of last refuge for families with nowhere else to go — among the deadliest recurring patterns of the ongoing violence.
Children and women continue to bear the heaviest toll of these ceasefire violations. Since October 11 of last year, women and children have made up roughly 60% to 70% of the 1,214 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks despite the truce — meaning an estimated 400 to 500 of the dead have been children, a toll into which Rita’s name has now been added.
