UN Chief Guterres: Israeli Settlements Illegal and a Flagrant Breach of International Law

UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated on July 17, 2026, that Israeli settlements built on occupied Palestinian territory carry no legal legitimacy under international law and represent a flagrant violation of it. His remarks align with the long-standing position of the United Nations, which considers all Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, illegal under international law regardless of Israeli domestic policy toward the territory.

The statement was issued against the backdrop of continued settlement expansion and settler violence across the West Bank, including land seizures, the uprooting of olive trees, and attacks on Palestinian residents and their property in towns such as Yatta, Nablus, and Ramallah’s surrounding villages — incidents that have been reported almost daily by Palestinian and international monitors in recent weeks.

Guterres’ comments add to mounting international pressure on Israel over settlement policy, coming alongside separate measures by other governments, including a recent decision by Belgium to ban the import of products originating from Israeli settlements. Palestinian officials welcomed the UN chief’s statement while calling for it to be followed by concrete measures rather than rhetorical condemnation alone, arguing that verbal statements without enforcement have failed to curb settlement growth for decades.
