Israeli Airstrike Assassinates Public Relations Director of Egyptian Gaza Reconstruction Committee

An Israeli airstrike killed Mohammed Fawaz al-Wuhaidi, known as Abu Suhaib, the public relations director of the Egyptian Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, after his vehicle was targeted in the al-Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City.

News of his death triggered an outpouring of grief and condemnation across Gaza, with activists, public figures, and officials paying tribute to his role over the past several years in overseeing and coordinating vital humanitarian and reconstruction projects carried out by the Egyptian committee to ease the suffering of residents in the besieged territory.

Local observers noted that the assassination fits into a broader and troubling pattern in which humanitarian, relief, and development workers in Gaza have repeatedly come under attack. Dozens of employees from local, Arab, and international organizations have been killed by Israeli strikes since the start of the war, raising serious concerns about the safety of humanitarian personnel operating in the Strip.

Al-Wuhaidi’s tribe, the Tarabin, based in both Egypt and Palestine, issued a statement mourning his loss, describing him as a devoted public servant whose life was marked by “a distinguished record of humanitarian giving and service to his people.” The statement said the tribe received the news “with hearts believing in God’s decree,” honoring what it called a life dedicated to duty and homeland.

The killing raises fresh questions about the safety guarantees extended to reconstruction and relief personnel operating under the Egyptian-led committee framework in Gaza, at a time when reconstruction efforts remain central to the broader post-war recovery plan.
