Israeli government approves the formation of “National Guard” led by Ben Gvir
The Israeli government approved on Sunday afternoon the establishment of the “National Guard”, which will report directly to the extremist Minister of “National Security”, Itamar Ben Gvir, without referring to the police.
And the Israeli Channel “12” reported that the government approved today the proposal of the occupation prime minister to form the “National Guard”, and a vote was also taken to reduce the budgets of the various ministries at a value of 1.5 billion shekels as a budget for its formation.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put forward the name of the reserve officer, Gal Hirsch, and his loyalist, to be the commander of this group.
According to Ben Gvir’s proposal, the National Guard will consist of 5 regular brigades that include 2,500 border guards, in addition to 46 reserve companies, and that members of the Guard will have powers to carry out arrests.
Ben Gvir demands the creation of 1,800 jobs in the first phase, at a cost of 1.4 billion shekels.
According to Ben Gvir’s proposal, which was published last Wednesday, “the National Guard will rely on regular forces and tactical brigades to deal with specific cases and will be deployed diagonally.”
Meanwhile, Likudian Minister Gila Gamlili attacked Ben Gvir’s pursuit of more powers, saying, “It seems that you are in a hurry and want to get everything at our expense.”
In turn, the leader of the Israeli opposition, Yair Lapid, attacked the decision, saying that “the government voted to form a private army belonging to Ben Gvir at the expense of the rest of the ministries and at the expense of taxpayers.”
Lapid added, “They cut the budget for health, education, welfare, transportation, and security only in order to establish a private army of outlaws in favor of the clown on tuk-tuks, the godfather of pita bread. The government’s priorities are pathetic. For three months, it has been seeking to eliminate democracy and carry out adventures for delirious people.”
