Israeli policeman accused of killing an autistic Palestinian man in Jerusalem acquitted

The Israeli District Court in occupied Jerusalem today acquitted the policeman who killed autistic Palestinian man Iyad Hallaq in the Old City of Jerusalem on May 30, 2020.

The policeman shot Hallaq, 32, despite knowing of his disability, alleging he suspected Hallaq had a suspicious object in his hand, then retracted this claim and acknowledged that he was not armed.

The court acquitted the policeman of any wrongdoing and only claimed that he “acted recklessly.”

This is not the first case in which members of the occupation soldiers or police have been acquitted of the charges against them. The Israeli military prosecution recently decided to close the investigation file for the Israeli soldiers involved in last year’s mistreatment and abuse of the elderly Palestinian-American, Omar Asaad, 80, from the village of Jaljalia, north of Ramallah, which resulted in his death without indicting any of the soldiers.
