Pro-Palestine Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor dies at age 56

Irish singer and musician Sinéad O’Connor has died on Wednesday at the age of 56, her family confirmed in a statement.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the singer’s family.

O’Connor, who was known for her 1990 hit song Nothing Compares 2 U, was also known for her political activism, and support of the Palestinian cause.

Shortly after Israel’s brutal aggression on the Gaza Strip in 2014, the Grammy-award winning icon cancelled a concert in Caesarea, an Israeli town near Tel Aviv.

“Nobody with any sanity, including myself, would have anything but sympathy for the Palestinian plight,” she said explaining her stance. “There’s not a sane person on earth who in any way sanctions what the f**k the Israeli authorities are doing.”

In 2018, O’Connor converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada.

In 1997, she withdrew from an Israeli show in support of the Palestinians.
